I've been pondering what will be the next step in entertainment. I believe the makers of Half Life 2 gave a glimpse, providing the base product, plus episodes 1 and episodes 2. World of Warcraft provides updates to content as well as repeatable content that provides motivation to return and continue participating daily.
So what's next? Weekly episodic gaming is my prediction. Just like TV shows, players will tune in, waiting for the new content, replaying the previous content (to catch up). All thats needed is to introduce content that occupies more than an hour of players' time and you'd exceed the value ofered by most TV shows.
What's most lacking in gaming is the creative story telling and compelling content for a broader audience. Bring together the story telling and intelligence of the creation process with a fixed environment (to reduce quality assurance time) you have a captive and compelled audience. The biggest challenge is the reduction in the natural tendency to avoid excessive player counts in the same area by having common content.
I for one look forward. I'd find an hour a week to play a level of Half Life 2 (or perhaps something less depressing) ....
